6-Week Group Support Programme: Healing from Childhood Trauma
Introduction:
This 6 week group support programme is designed to help adult survivors of childhood abuse and trauma find healing and empowerment through the principles of Judith Herman's trauma recovery philosophy. The programme aims to create a safe and supportive environment where participants can share their experiences, learn coping strategies, and embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing.
Programme Structure:
The programme will consist of weekly 2-hour sessions, facilitated by trained professionals with expertise in trauma recovery and group therapy. Each session will focus on a specific theme and incorporate various therapeutic techniques, such as psychoeducation, mindfulness exercises, group discussions, and experiential activities.
Week 1: Understanding Trauma and Its Impact
Introduction to the programme and group members
Psychoeducation on trauma and its effects on the mind, body, and relationships
Establishing group guidelines and creating a safe space
Week 2: Grounding and Self-Regulation
Exploring the concept of grounding and its importance in trauma recovery
Practicing mindfulness and breathing exercises
Developing self-regulation strategies for managing overwhelming emotions
Week 3: Nurturing Self-Compassion
Addressing self-blame and shame associated with childhood trauma
Cultivating self-compassion through guided exercises and coping statements
Exploring the concept of self-care and its role in healing
Week 4: Exploring Emotions and Emotional Expression
Identifying and labelling emotions
Learning healthy ways to express and process emotions
Practicing emotional regulation techniques (ACT)
Week 5: Building Healthy Relationships
Examining the impact of childhood trauma on interpersonal relationships
Developing effective communication skills
Setting boundaries and fostering healthy connections (NVC)
Week 6: Reclaiming Personal Power
Exploring the concept of personal power and its importance in healing
Identifying and challenging limiting beliefs and negative self-talk
Practicing assertiveness and self-advocacy
Throughout the programme, participants will have the opportunity to share elements of their experiences, BUT ONLY if they wish to do so, receive support from peers, and learn practical strategies for coping with trauma-related challenges. The programme will emphasise the importance of self-care, self-compassion, and empowerment.
